Top 5 Things to Do in Boracay

By Fareboom Staff, Thu, Apr 23, 2015

At 4 miles long and only a mile wide at its narrowest point, Boracay’s big reputation far exceeds its small size. With its blindingly-white sands, azure-coloured waters, and lazy palm trees, the island truly embodies the image of a tropical paradise. Although it would be easy to spend every day simply stretched out in the blissfully-soft sands of iconic White Beach, here are a few activities that are worth adding to your itinerary.

Watch the Sunset on White Beach

White Beach is easily the island’s most picturesque beach, with powdery white sands stretching for 4 kilometers. Boracay is known for its vivid sunsets and west-facing White Beach is the best place on the island to enjoy them. Sunset is also a particularly charming time of day to visit White Beach, with people gradually gathering on the beach as the afternoon heat subsides and local children often playing soccer on the shore. Walk along the edge of the watch or relax with a drink at plastic restaurant tables that spill out onto the beach as you watch the sky turn bright shades of pink and orange.  Lined with bars, cafes, and hotels, White Beach is also the liveliest place on the island to be once the sun goes down, known for its vibrant nightlife.

Eat Fresh Seafood at D’Talipapa

D’Talipapa is a popular wet market where you can buy fresh/live seafood, with stalls selling everything from crabs and oysters, to lobsters and fish. After picking out some seafood, you can bring it to one of the restaurants located beside the market and the staff will cook it up however you want, whether you prefer it fried, steamed, or grilled. There are also a number of shops in and around the market, where you can browse for sarongs, bags, wooden crafts, and other souvenirs. Remember to haggle over the price, particularly if you’re interested in buying in bulk.

Search for Puka Shells on Yapak Beach

A peaceful alternative to bustling White Beach, Yapak Beach is a quiet stretch of sand found along the northern tip of the island. The sand is somewhat coarser and the waves are rougher compared to White Beach, but the lack of crowds makes it a wonderfully tranquil place to go for a walk. The beach is covered in puka shells of varying sizes, shapes, and colors, which locals often collect to make ornaments, necklaces, bracelets and other handicrafts. You can gather a few of your own puka shells as you stroll along the coast, admiring the cyan-colored waters of the sea. There are fewer services on this side of the island, but you’ll find a few simple restaurants where you can stop for a break.

Cliff Dive at Ariel’s Point

Ariel’s Point is found in the small town of Buruanga, which is located about a 45-minute boat-ride away from Boracay. The cliff features a number of different diving boards set at various heights, allowing visitors to jump from wherever they’re most comfortable. You can stick with the enjoyable 2-meter jump, or challenge yourself to jump from the highest board which is set 15 meters above the water. Excursion packages can be bought on Boracay and typically include the boat ride to the cliff, unlimited cliff dives, a BBQ buffet lunch, and snorkelling.

Learn to Kite Surf on Bulabog Beach

Located on the eastern side of the island opposite White Beach, Bulabog Beach is one of Asia’s top kite surfing destinations. The beach is known for having big waves and strong winds throughout the year. Guesthouse prices are typically more affordable compared to White Beach, and the overall atmosphere is more laid-back. The beach is lined with kite surfing schools and small, rustic bars and restaurants. Facing towards the east, Bulabog Beach is also a fantastic place to watch the sunrise.
